I am not sure why California wanted to become a state, but I do know that CA's statehood was greatly anticipated by both the North and the South. CA came in at the time of the Civil War, and it's stand on slavery would be very monumental to the opposing side. California came in as a free state, which was detrimental to the South. I don't know if that is what you wanted to know, but even if it wasn't, you now have information you didn't have before. ;) GL.

Missouri's request for statehood touched off a sectional crisis between the northern, non-slave states and the south, slave holding states. The crisis was whether Missouri and future states in general would become slave holding states or not. This crisis was solved by having every state north of parallel 36°30' that was newly christened into the union would be a free state an any state below that line would be a slave holding state, this was the Missouri Compromise.

California's request for statehood in 1850 sparked a crisis in Congress primarily due to the contentious issue of slavery. The rapid influx of settlers during the Gold Rush led California to seek admission as a free state, threatening the delicate balance between free and slave states. This prompted fierce debates and ultimately contributed to the passage of the Compromise of 1850, which aimed to address tensions by admitting California as a free state while allowing other territories to decide the slavery issue through popular sovereignty. The crisis highlighted the deepening sectional divides that would eventually lead to the Civil War.

During the oil crisis in the USA there was shortage of fuel. Jimmy Carter's response was to request that the nation conserve fuel. He put on a sweater and announced on TV that he was turning his thermostat down to 55. He also got Congress to enact the Crude Oil Excess Profits Tax, actually an excess tax on crude oil.
California's application for statehood caused a crisis because most of the state was still under Mexican control and it wasn't known if California would be a slave state or not.
