Gandhi wanted the British to leave India after 300 years of colonial rule because he believed in self-determination and the right of Indians to govern themselves. He viewed British rule as exploitative and detrimental to India's social and economic fabric. Gandhi advocated for nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience as means to achieve independence, emphasizing the importance of Indian cultural identity and unity. Ultimately, he sought to empower the Indian people and restore their dignity and autonomy.

the British East India Company
India broke free from British rule in 1947, gaining independence on August 15. This marked the end of nearly 200 years of British colonialism in the subcontinent. The struggle for independence was characterized by various movements and led by prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Following independence, India was partitioned into two separate nations: India and Pakistan.
The British trading companies were present in India from around 1600 a.d. which at this time was known as the India Empire. The British East India Company, in 1612 started to build factories in Surat under an agreement lead by King James I and Mughal Emperor Nuruddin Salim Jahangir. In return Emperor Jahangir would take a cut of the profits. Over the next 150 years the East India company backed by the crown and through negotiation with local Mughal Emperors and leaders. Over time It increased it's influence, taking control of towns and cities such as Bombay and Calcutta. In 1858 the rule of the British East India Company was transferred to Queen Victoria and at this point it became under British rule and became official part of the British Empire. Governors were dispatched to the cities that had formerly been owned by the British East India company and this began the true start of the British rule of India to the point that in 1876 Queen Victoria was proclaimed "Empress of India". During the British Raj (British reign) of India there were many uprisings which were quelled by force. It is not unfair to say that the British were responsible for many atrocities, however taken in perspective for the age this was not unusual and to be fair, not much worse than those caused by the local warring Mughals. There were also many benefits such the import of technologies, industrialisation and construction of railway systems and engines, most of which are still in use today, some eighty years after the British left. India remained under British control until 1947 when India was returned to self governance through the actions of civil disobedience lead by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi).

Gandhi is not the right answer.... The Indian people who sacrificed their lives have made India independent. And those who unite princely states into one India lead to Independence...
Gandhi protest against the British nonviolently. The reason he did this was because the British had bribed them with gold and trade, and had Indies trust in the British. As they keep giving their trust gradually the British took over India. The British had control over them for several years, finally the Indies had enough so they just got in the way of everything and did not hit or push back when the British got them. They just keep getting back up and going on and this went on for a few days and finally the British had enough and went home!! So Gandhi's focus was to to get the British out of there with out anyone from either side getting hurt. Needless to say Gandhi was a pretty smart guy:)
Mahatma Gandhi never actually enjoyed India being free as his real India was torn into Pakistan (the so called Muslim India) and the so called Hindu India (thanks to the British Government). But if taken in terms today then Gandhiji saw India free for barely one year. Indian freedom - 15th August 1947 Mahatma's Death - 30th January 1948
