The colonies (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick) put aside differences and created a new country because it would benefit them. They would have greater population which increases the money; we would get richer. if we are richer we can get the things we need for this country and the people. most of all it is because we needed greater defense. if they didn't decide that we should be a country than we would be a part of U.S now. If we didn't become one country than U.S would attack and try to get our land one by one. One of the other reasons is because of our defense for our colonies. if we are still little colonies than of course people would take our land because of low defense. we need defense to protect and keep our land.

Confederation happened in 1867 and that is when Canada became a country. The provinces did not want to be subject to Britain's rules anymore, they wanted to be in charge of their own land and have their own laws. Their reasoning was similar to Americans, only less violent.

It was recommended by John Lambton. He had the nick name "Radical Jack"

he made a statement that said:

1. to stop further rebellions, we should join Canada east/upper Canada with Canada west/lower Canada to become, "The Province of Canada".

2. He recommended "responsible government", which would mean that the monarch would loose almost ALL power over Canada.

They took his advise on the province of Canada immediately, but it took several years for the provinces to slowly change to responsible government.
