Silk Road is a name which indicate a network of trading routes across Asia. It has been called Silk Road because the most important good which was traded along the routes from China to the Mediterranean Sea was silk. Since the Chinese did not want to buy any Roman goods, this trade constituted an outflow of money from the Roman Empire. A substantial part of China's wealth came from the silk trade.
