take power away from the southern planters.
Simply, it suited the Southern farmers to have access to unpaid manual labour.
Northern industrial employers could not use this kind of labour; they wanted free movement of skilled tradesmen and craftsmen, which is why slavery had died out in the North.
because they knew the South's economy depended on slave labor
Many northern whites object to slavery because it caused issues when new land was annexed because they wanted a balance.
Definitely. Lincoln always disliked slavery for many reasons and that is why he made slavery illegal in all places of the northern territory.
In 1820, there was growing complaints against slavery. Many in the northern states were opposed to slavery and those in southern states saw it as an economic necessity. To keep the balance of free and slave states, Missouri was added as a slave state and Maine as a free state. This measure helped delay the Civil War.
Most people view slavery as a bad thing, and if you do, then having it abolished is a good thing. Abolished means destroyed, put an end to. So having slavery abolished wasn't a bad thing for the African Americans, or for the people who believed that it should be abolished. Though many of the people who owned slaves might not think it was good because they would then have to do the work that their slaves used to do for them, or they would have to pay their slaves/servants.

Before, during, and after the American Civil War, it can be fairly said that many northern whites (and others) objected to slavery on very simple moral grounds. They opposed the practice within America or anywhere because of what they saw as its inherent wrong: no human being is rightly held in bondage to any other on the basis of supposed racial, ethnic, economic, or any other inferiority.
Many of them supported it.
europe was ruled by brown and blak complexioned persons (1100-1848) when slavery was introduced. the first slaves in the americas were their serfs who were whites. whites were emancipated in 1848, and stepped in the shoes of the black and brown slavemasters. the object of slavery is making money. today men still enslave women which is called prostitution, and it comes with the international trade in women.
The North in general opposed slavery, however, if it was abolished, many whites had concerns. Many believed that freed slaves would move north and take jobs at lower pay then whites. This was an economic fear. Also, although whites had sympathy for slaves, freeing them and giving them the same equality as whites cut into their racism. They truly believed that Blacks were inferior people. To have them be on an equal basis as whites was a problem for them. There was little fear of race riots.

Because the southern states were economies based on slavery and many in the northern states felt that slavery was wrong.
