Back in that day, farming was the most common occupation, and a couple of years of poor summers had made farming a really tough business. So those who still had a bit money to spend moved to the US in hopes of being able to make a better living there.

During the Napoleonic war Norway was in an golden age, becouse people needed wood and iron. When the war was over Norway was given to Sweden from Denmark. When the war ended, the other countries didn't need wood or iron. So it was bad times in Norway then. We was poor and didn't own much, and in the US people could get free land to farm, and could get full every day. I hope this answered your question.
