Titanic, Olympic, and Britannic were built to compete with Cunard's Lusitania and Mauritania.

The transatlantic immigrant trade was a booming business at the beginning of the 20th century with people emigrating to the US looking for a better life. People wanted big and powerful ships to travel on the White Star Line saw the opportunity to put their biggest competitor a run for their money with three sister triple screw luxury liners.

The Olympic had her keel laid down first, Titanic was laid down a little later but right next to her in a twin pair of massive steel scaffolding berths where the ships would be later launched. Britannic, rumored to be called Gigantic was laid down in Olympic's berth. After Titanic sank, the name became Britannic so people didn't associate the new sister ship with Titanic, although she too would sink in 1916 as a hospital ship in the Agean Sea during WWI.
