Well the ss californian was quite near but they didnt help the titanic, there was also another ship, Sampson which was two to five miles away. It ignored the titanic because it had a lot of seals on board that they had illegally been hunting.
It has never been fully explained, but at the enquiry it was established that the Californian's officers saw distress rockets but no-one on board treated them seriously. The Californian had a wireless telegraphy set and an operator, but a single operator could not keep watch 24 hours per day and the Californian's operator was in bed. The Captain was also in bed and it didn't occur to anyone to wake up the wireless operator, so they missed the whole thing.
The Californian was estimated to be about 8 kilometres away from the Titanic when it sank. At that time Californian was stopped due to the fact that they had spotted icebergs in their path, and was waiting for daylight so they could navigate through them. The Californian Saw titanic Stress flares but thought they were fireworks so didnt help them out. Also they Turned off there Transmitter ilegaly so couldn't respond.
It didnt have to happen, the circumstances it would not of happened was 1/2 a stupid radiosman decided not to read the message but discard it!, he cost the mistake 1.5K lives from that mistake!
1334 people did not survive the sinking of the titanic on April 14th-15th 1912
because the raido man on the Californian was asleep when they got the telegram
The Californian was the vessel that famously hovered less than twenty miles away when Titanic, the greatest ship in the world, sank.
