Digital television is not so much an invention as development. There are several factors that have supported the introduction of digital television. Looking at the question from another perspective, digital television has only recently been available for consumers because the cost of computing hardware has been prohibitively expensive until recent years. The rapid decrease in the cost of large and complex electronic circuits over the last decade has enabled viewers to make use of digital television at a sensible cost. However, digital television has been around for 30 years. The early digital effects units made an entrance to the television production scene during the 70s and have been improving ever since. A DVE is the device used to resize, reshape and manipulate video images and today it is used on virtually every production in some way. With more and more digital equipment available for production, almost all broadcast studios now use digital signals from the camera to tape. The final program is archived on disc rather than tape in most modern facilities so the final link to the consumer inevitably was to become a digital signal. Digital storage has enabled quick and simple re-purposing. This is the process by which a program can be broadcast over traditional links to a television and also formatted ready for broadcast over the internet, to Ipods or to mobile phones. The formats are very different but digital storage is the starting point for the formatting process. It has also enabled video on demand services that would be impossible with analog storage and transmission Television and computing are converging. Computer data and Internet communication is digital and as television is sharing many of the same lines, digital data makes it far easier to combine both services. As a result, a single fiber or copper link into a house can serve telephones, Internet and television services. The convergence will continue until there is little distinction between data and broadcast. Digital program delivery to homes allows more channels to be accommodated, more additional services to be provided like multi-language content and interactive services. The progression to digital has been planned for many years and we will see more ways to receive television programs in the coming years.

The reason for digital transmission was cited as a method to free up broadcast spectrum and better use existing allocations of rthe spectrum. Using the same frequency range using digital transmission more content could be delivered using the same ranges and for certain spectrum alloactions they existing allocations could be shrunk and more segments licensed out. e.g. (simplified numbers used) 100-200 Might be an allocation for analog broadcast. Provides one channel for television with stereo sound. or 100-200 Using digital broadcast could provide 2 channels. One standard definition and one high definition with full surround sound. or 100-150 For a single station in digital 151-200 for a single station in digital And other various combinations. By going digital they can take advantage of various compression and encoding techniques that were not available via analog broadcast. Additional arguments offered for the transition were far more technical in nature including but not limited to broadcast tower configurations, power requirements for broadcast facilities, better handling of adverse weather, sub channel information (station ID embedded in the signal), and so on.

Check the user's manual. Most TVs made in the last 2 years are digital. For sets older than that, you can find out by going to the manufacturer's web site.

If you have a digital tv and an outdoor antennae do you need a converter box?

In the US the answer is probably not. Digital and analog TV broadcasts use the same frequencies and antennas. Digital TV is more fussy about signal quality than the older analog signals. So if you get marginal analog reception, figure on getting a new antenna for digital. The idea that there are special HDTV antennas is just marketing hype. Any antenna that gives you better digtial reception will also give you better digital reception.

Will a set top box improve signal quality for your TV?

Set top box is basically used to convert the digital signals broadcasted by digital signal broadcasters to analog signals, in case you wish to have your analog tv, but would like to have an access to digital channels. Digital channels definitely have better quality signals than analog and therefore you will have a better picture quality and signal quality even though you have converted the digital signals to analog.

Why digital signal is better than analog signal?

the digital code is binar. so if you get a signal it is absolut. analogue signals can be interfered or altered through interferation.

How do you know if your TV is digital or analog?

"Standard-definition" (meaning 480i) Cathode-ray tube televisions are analog. CRT TV's are easily identifiable by their immense weight and the fact that their depth nearly matches their width and height. Newer, hi-def (720p, 1080i/p) televisions are almost all either lcd, plasma, or dlp, all of which are digital. for digital TV monitor shouldnot be of CRT.

Will the digital TV signal cause damage to an analog TV that does not have a digital converter box?

No.

Why was analog switched to digital?

Because it had so many more advantages than than analogue radio and tv. It has better sound quality, less interference...

Why did you have to change to digital TV?

The move to digital television broadcasting reflects the change in production, storage and viewing of television content. Digital transmission adds features that analog services are unable to support and there is a flexibility in the use of transmission bandwidth that is also not possible with analog broadcasts. As far as the viewer is concerned, digital television broadcasts allow far more channels to be received and normally with better image quality than seen with analog.

Are TV RF signals analog rather than digital?

In the US and Europe they are almost all digital.

With digital adapter only get some stations why?

DTV sometime needs a better antenna than the old analog TVs. A few stations did not switch to DTV and are still Analog like LPTV which is Low Power TV.

Why are some converter boxes some cheap some expensive?

A Digital Television (DTV) Converter Box is an electronic device that converts the new free over-the-air digital signal into an analog signal viewable on older "analog" television set. The digital to analog converter box connects your antenna or rabbit ears to your TV set. It will allow you to continue watching TV after February 17, 2009, the day the transition to "all digital" takes place. A digital to analog converter box will not give you a digital picture on an analog TV set. Analog TV sets using the set top boxes will show digital broadcasts, but not in the full picture quality of digital TV. However, your picture will be better than it was with the old analog signal. Technically speaking about picture quality: The reason the picture quality won't be as good on an analog TV set is because of the display resolution. Analog TV screens aren't designed to display the same level of picture quality and resolution that is found in the digital TV signal.

How can you convert the digital to analog or analog to digital?

Buy a new digital ready tv, get a digital receiver Sky or Freeview for your analogue tv
