well they are different gangs separated by their social status. they pretty much hated each other. they wanted to show each other who was stronger to they set up a fight and whoever won would be the winner

∙ 12y agoThey fight because a greaser (forgot who) killed a Soc (forgot who), and the Socs wanted revenge/payback, so they fight in the vacant parking lot. They fight in the vacant lot, so no one would be there to call the cops. Go to sparknotes.com and it tells you ALL about the book. :)
