Johnny was the only person in the world who truly loved Dally, and Dally was the only person who truly loved Johnny. Without Johnny in his life he felt as if there was no point of moving on. I'm not sure if he really "wanted" to die...but he stole the money because he needed to do something bad. Johnny was the only thing Dally even cared about and seeing Johnny die was too much for Dally. Dally is in a upset state when he runs into the store and robs it and when he gets into the mess, he decides to finish his life by using an unloaded gun and holding it up so he was shot to death. Dally was in grief and a pretty gallant guy.
In the beginning of the book, it doesn't seem like Dally would be the person who wanted to die. But, at the end of the book, when the cops shot him, he was happy. He was happy because the world took away the only thing he loved, Johnny, so he wanted to die also to be with the only thing he ever loved.
