This effect was predicted by Albert Einstein's theories of relativity, and have been demonstrated to be true in laboratory tests. we don't yet know WHY; we only know that it IS.

There was once a joke about Einstein's theory of relativity. Another scientist introduced Einstein as "one of only ten people in the world who understand the theory of relativity". Einstein frowned, and asked "Who are the other nine?"

Accelerating to extremely high velocities has the effect of bending space/time from the point of view of the traveler. Accelerating and decelerating at all has this relativistic effect, but for practical, earth-bound applications, the effects are so tiny that they are meaningless. Even for astronauts (so far), the relativistic effects of space missions are too small for them to notice, but accurate clocks can pick up the effects, and they follow the distortions predicted by Einstein.

First of all, there's two theories of relativity. The one on normal relativity which indicates that an object that is moving very fast will experience less time than one that is stable. The one on special relativity indicates that the more gravity an object is putted into, the less time it will suffer and counting on the black hole's massive gravity, the object seems if intact while reaching the event horizon, it will live trough forever, but this will also be hard to detect because light itself cannot escape one it reaches or is close enough to the event horizon.

The strong gravity of a black hole will distort both space and time. The explanation is some complicated math; if you are interested in the details, and have some background information in math and science, do some reading about the General Theory of Relativity.
