If you look at Table Mountain from the Cape Town city side, its looks flat topped. The front edge is indeed quite flat edged. This was unusual and interesting to the early European explorers so it was called Table Mountain. From the back and sides it is clearly not flat topped, but those rougher bits have other names like "The Twelve Apostles".
