Best Answer

1 . Because the North Island and South Island of New Zealand span different Plates.

2 . Their characteristics (or attributes) are therefore dissimilar.

3 . The North Island is on the Thinner Pacific Plate .(volcanoes)

4 . The South Island West of the 500km Southern Alpine fault is on the Thicker Australian Plate. They meet at the southern alps-more or less. Alps are pushed westward and up about 7mm per year. (therefore more earthquakes than volcanoes)

add. But in the past there has been volcanic activity in the S Island.

Banks Peninsula, and a large area from about Oamaru south to near Milton, including the Dunedin Volcanics, and some on the Kakanui Range. Most recently however, some tens of millions of years.

BTW all the 'hot springs' in the S Island are on the East of the Alpine Fault, and are caused by the land uplifting faster than it cools.

Why does New Zealand have volcanoes in the central north island but not in the south island?

There have been in the past, extensive volcanic activity in the South Island, but long ago - perhaps tens of millions of years. Today, active volcanic and geothermal activity is mainly in the North Island and its immediate islands such as Mayor and White Islands, but the Kermadec Islands have active vulcanism. Today's active volcanism is mainly in the Taupo Volcanic zone, which extends from the two offshore islands above, to the volcanic trio of the National Park to the south. Tongariro, Ruapehu, and Ngaruahoe. Taranaki/Mount Egmont is not part of this activity, but may herald future activity in the Wanganui back-arc basin.
