In 1885 Louis Riel was the leader of the Metis and first Nations people of western Canada against the Canadian government. After his capture in the North-West Rebellion, he stood trial and was found guilty of treason. He was then hung.

When Riel was leader of Red River he had Thomas Scott shot by firing squad for treason. Which normally would be fine as governments did that all the time in those days but Canada insisted they were the only government the people could have. Canada proved that at the point of a bayonet and for Riel, and others, the end of a rope.
