Why would people in the 1800's believe in ghosts more than they do now?

Ghost exists but at that time the belief was stronger than now. More unknowns mean you have a more difficult time explaining why things happen. We don't like leaving things unknown, so perhaps people in the 19th century were more inclined to accept a supernatural explanation because they didn't have the understanding for a perfectly logical explanation. That or the Ghostbusters really cleaned up in the 80s.
