Check your parking brake, it will do this if your brake is set. Otherwise, check your air filter, change the spark plug, and clean the carburetors one at a time if the problem still persists.does the machine have a throttle override? I know Yamaha has them on many models. it was meant to retard the engine if the throttle sticks, or by the sounds of it, if the parking brake is left on.

timing could be too far advanced. another sign of timing advanced too far would be that the engine turns over slow or with hard hits. or if it pops at idle, it could be getting too much gas. thread in the idle set screws a little at a time to see if it stops popping. if it doesn't, return the screws to original position. if it pops above idle, you should look into changing the metering rods and jets, or placing with a smaller carburetor if it pops when you step on the gas its more than likely a worn lob on the cam.

You will need a special tool called a "fork" that pops the connection. Remove the nut at the end of the idle arm joint then put the fork in place and give it a few good hits with a big hammer. Of course you will complete the destruction of the idle arm, but you're replacing it anyway. After the joint is loose, remove the bolts from the frame and drop the idle arm and replace it.
