There have been a number of these situations with chemcals other than just DDT. DDT presented a particular problem because it does not leave the ecosystem; it is passed up the food chain. More recently, DDT was discovered on the grounds of the old prison farms at Southern Michigan Prison in Jackson. The Detroit Free Press reported in the mid-80's that surplus Agent Orange was buried on the grounds of G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility (beneath the dining facility and within feet of one of three well heads there that incidentally suuplies municipal water to the city of Jackson). And, PCBs were buried along with contaminated cattle carcasses on and near the grounds of Pine River and Mid-Michigan Correctional Facilities at St. Louis, Michigan.

Additionally, under the Granholm administration, eight years of uninspected waste was trucked into Michigan from Canada and buried.

Are consumers organisms that get solar or other energy indirectly?

Consumers are heterotrophs and do not get their energy directly, but by eating organisms that do, or by eating other consumers. Herbivores are primary consumers, predators are secondary or higher. Detrivores consume the dead matter left by either producers, or consumers, or both.

Can tertiary consumers be eaten?

If you mean are they the top predators, then No (as they can be scavengers).

What does the hardness of an alto saxophone reed do?

The number on the reed indicates the thickness of the reed. A thinner reed is easier to blow, but also is more delicate and does not last as long. Most beginners start with a lower number reed and, as their "chops" develop, move up to a higher number. Higher numbered reeds also improve quality of sound. It is most common to see a professional using a 2 1/2 - 3 saxophone reed.

What does the fourth to twelfth fret of guitar be used for?

The fourth and the twelfth fret on a guitar are used for the same reasons that the other frets are used to make notes. The higher the number of the fret the higher the note is. Each fret represents a half step up from the previous note.

Why must primary consumers eat large numbers of plants?

Energy concentrations in plants are lower than in animal flesh. Herbivores have to consume large quantities of plant matter in order to subsist. Carnivores, who consume the herbivores, require much smaller volumes of their food source because its energy concentration is much higher.

What is bioamplification?

Bioamplification, or biomagnification, is the process that results in the increasing toxin concentration in consumers in successive trophic levels. In other words, the collecting of poison and chemicals in animal's tissues becomes more concentrated when animals are higher up in the food chain.
