Are electric guitars played differently than acoustic guitars?

not really there are more techniques for an acoustic that you can play on an electric but sound better on an acoustic and are mainly for an acoustic. Therefore electric Guitars can be played differently but aren't usually.

As a guitarist, I find the above answer good enough to be a sufficient answer but I feel I can add. Yes. Acoustic Guitars are played incredibly differently to Electric guitars. You'll find electric Guitarists will be using plectrums or picks and whilst on an acoustic this isn't unheard of, the acoustic guitar is usually plucked with fingerstyle. Self explanatory in the sense that you play with your fingers. The above answer does recognise though that techniques work best on a certain guitar and you'll find electric guitars have thinner strings with more leverage and bend. You'll also find you won't need to really blast on the strings to get max sound out whilst playing electric as the amplifier will do that for you! Acoustic guitar is somewhat tougher to move to after having a few days on an electric, I find!

Acoustic is actually harder. Many people think electric is because of all the solo's and performances by many legend rockers! Acoustic is harder because the strings are more rough and thick, causing your fingers to hurt. Electric is more for sliding back and forth so If that's what your looking for I recommend Electric Guitar!

Althought this is mostly an opinion question, certain aspects of playing lead to the thought that playing electirc guitar would be easier. Without an amplifier to enhance your sound, when you play a standard acoustic you must play harder to produce a higher volume. With an electric, you can play softly and amplify the sound to the desired volume thus making it easier. Also the strings are different on the two types of guitars. Normally the strings on acoustic guitars might be have higher tension which means you have to press harder. On electric guitars, the action and tension can be reduced slightly, making it easier to fret your fingers which leads to a possible increase in speed.

This depends upon the type of skill of the maker. Electric guitars are relatively easy to construct in reference to the body, neck and fretboard etc, but include the added category of electronics. Acoustic guitars (except Electro-acoustics) have no electronics, but have hollow bodies which are more difficult to produce as they require several thin pieces of solid wood or laminate, rather than just solid wood or MDF.

I am going to say Electric, but its totally up to the player. I play both and it seems that the Electric was harder for ME to learn. But now i like playing the electric more so if your basing which one to learn on this then play both and see which one you like.

Clasical is easier on your fingers (but in my opinion, acoustic is richer in sound quality) but they are both as hard as eachother
