Many different kinds of wood are used to make upright pianos. They have used different wood as time goes by, and they have also used different keys. For example, a piano i bought just recently is made out of mahogany, but one i bought in '80 is made out of birch.

In the past, the keys were covered with a layer of Ivory and are often still called "The Ivories" but better, more durable, and more economic materials began to be used in the 1930's to the joy of elephants everywhere. The black keys are made of the same base material, but are capped with a piece of ebony or plastic material to provide the contrast between the keys.
