We should not confuse the families with what the instruments are made of, the woodwinds are made from metal and wood (Flute, piccolo and saxophones are normally made from metal today), the brasswinds can be made from wood - early trumpets were. The didgeridoo, an indigenous instrument from the north-west of the Cape York Peninsula and Eastern Arnhem Land in Australia is made from wood and beeswax and is a brasswind instrument - you blow raspberries into the mouthpiece as well as howl and talk into it to make the various sounds.
The families are named because of the mechanism they use to produce sound. The woodwinds use vibrating reeds or fixed fipples (the edge part of a whistle or flute). The brasswind make sounds by blowing raspberries into a mouthpiece. The percussion family makes sounds by being hit, scraped, rubbed or dropped. The stringsmake sounds by causing strings to vibrate by plucking or bowing them. The electrophones use electronic circuits to produce vibrations which are then amplified and fed to loudspeakers.
Do not confuse the electrophones with electric Guitars - these are a hybrid instrument, being basically a string instrument with electronic amplification and manipulation.
We can also classify the instruments according to how they make their sounds:
