Limewire is software that connects your computer to other computers (and other people are connected to your computer) in a network known as a peer to peer (sometime P2P). Once connected to such a network people can share files between their computers. If the files being shared are something that they have created themselves and they are happy to share their creations then it is perfectly legal to do so. If the files are things created by someone else (such as videos, music, games etc.) and the person sharing does not have any right (copyright and distribution right) to share them then it is illegal for them to share and for you to accept such items. As a quick guide: if it is something you would normally have to buy in a store and you are taking it for nothing you are stealing it, you are acting illegally and liable to be prosecuted.

LimeWire says:

"Your activities on peer-to-peer networks such as LimeWire may be monitored by copyright owners. Violation of copyright laws may subject one to substantial money damages. Copyright owners have sued thousands of people for infringement of copyright over peer-to-peer networks. "
