British Telecom used to market one of the first digital answering machines I ever saw about 10 years ago - it could be set to call you if someone left a message on it.

Can't remember the model number though.

What is an answering machine?

How to Trouble Shoot Telephone Answering Cassette Tape Problems Telephone answering machines are designed to record voice messages. The machine plays a voice message giving information or instructions to incoming callers. These callers are requested to leave messages that can be retrieved later by the owner of the answering machine. The answering machine then records the caller's response. Cassette-based answering machines store outgoing and incoming messages on audiotapes. A cassette deck records and plays audio signals stored on a magnetic tape. When the answering machine stops functioning, businesses can lose customers and it is sometimes cost-prohibitive to call a repair service. Many times, this answering machine malfunction can be tracked to problems with the cassette tape. When the phone rings, but the cassette does not record the messages, the following steps can be taken to correct the problem. Step 1. For loose cassette tapes, remove the screws that hold the cassette together and rewind it. Step 2: If the tape jams, you’ll have to replace that old tape with a new one, being careful while you remove the old tape. Step 3: For slow moving tapes, clean the heads of the answering machine and the tape path. Step 4: If the deck stops unexpectedly, or will not stop at the end of a tape, the cassette may be dirty. Clean the machine hubs as well as the cassette itself. Step 5: If the tape will not rewind or fast forward, check to see if the belt is loose or broken. If the belt is damaged, replace the belt. Step 6: If the deck will not record, the record/playback switch may be faulty. At this point, you’ll have to call a repair service or buy a new machine. . These are repair suggestions that if taken may solve the problem of an answering machine’s cassette malfunction. However, if after trying all of these suggestions the answering machine does not record or play back, it may be necessary to obtain the services of a professional.

How to Find Useful Answering Machines?

Before the invention of cell phones, the answering machine was essential to reducing missing important phone calls. Today, cell phone manufacturers continuously try to outdo each other with features such as the ability to store messages and missed phone calls. With the press of a button on the cell phone, a missed call or voice message can be returned. The answering machine is still used by millions of people, however, who have home and office phones that require an answering machine to capture missed calls and messages. But, the demand for answering machines is decreasing as more people turn to cell phones. Electronic stores and online distributors are still selling answering machines. If a used one will do, sites like Ebay, Craigslist and other advertising sites are selling new and used machines at very low rates. Some sites may not have a picture, but you can use the brand and model number to get information about the machine at the company site or blogs about electronics. Do not let a good price trick you into purchasing a machine that ends up in the garage or the trash because it is obsolete. Check for the manufacturers date using the serial or model numbers, and be sure that the manufacturer is still producing recording tapes and that they are readily available. Sooner or later, you will need to replace the recording cassette, especially if the machine does not work well and continuously damages the tape instead of winding it smoothly onto the correct reel. Choose a modern machine, and make sure that the manufacturer is reputable and still in business. The length of recording time and special features, such as power outage protection to prevent message loss, remote access and multiple mailboxes, may also interest you. Choose a machine with the most useful features, but be sure that you can easily find replacement tapes.

How to Leave Your Telphone/Answering Machine Combo Behind?

Not everyone is crazy about new technology. How else can you explain the fact that you can still buy phonographs in electronics stores, years after their death was proclaimed across the land when digital came on the scene? The same holds true for people who just refuse to follow the advances of our age and embrace the latest methods to receive and record phone messages. They insist on using telephone/answering machine combos. If you are one of those people who won’t join the rest of us in the 21st century, we want you to know the time has come. Leave your telephone/answering machine combo behind. Here’s how. Step One. Realize How Annoying Former Technologies can Be Don’t you know that these units confuse those of us living in the voicemail world? We leave our message and then don’t know what to do. First, we push the pound button, then perhaps the star button, and then finally even 9 1 (because that is what voicemail recording technology instructs people who leave messages to do) and still fail to hear that familiar “Your message has been sent. Thank you.” We can only hang up and hope, as if we’d thrown a message in a bottle out to sea, that our message has gotten through. We also wonder, because we know that the telephone/answering machine combos allow you to screen calls, if you aren’t actually standing right by the phone and disregarding our plea for you to pick up. Caller ID is different, that’s just a number we see on an LCD screen. You are actually hearing our voice and deeming us unworthy of your interest. Step Two. Decide to embrace technological advances Voicemail has advantages over the telephone/answering machine combo, which is why most of us use it, and you should too. First of all, it always works. You don’t have to remember to turn voicemail on, or worry that a lightning storm can disable it, or miss a call because you are on the phone or on the Internet and the combo can’t work if the line is engaged. Also, you might learn to love how easy it is to retrieve messages when you are away from home, skip through your messages or save and delete messages with a push of a button. So take the leap. Toss the telephone/answering machine combo in the trash bin, and join the rest of us who have learned to trust and rely on voicemail. Got the message?
