They can to some extent. If they're large enough it can be almost impossible to only hold down a string without pressing another. One thing you can do though, is buy a guitar with a large nut width. This puts more spacing on the strings, and makes the fretboard larger. I would recommend a classical guitar, but if you want a steel string sound, you can try Seagull Guitars. They have a larger than average nut width, originally made for fingerstyle playing, but can also help those with large fingers. Note: Do not put steel strings on a classical (Nylon) guitar. Steel strings apply more stress than nylon strings and will cause the bridge to lift (expensive to fix)

No, absolutely not! I am an excellent guitarist (have been playing for 37 year), and I have short, stubby fingers. Would longer fingers help? I suppose. But in all the years I've been playing, I can only remember one piece I ever encountered where I felt like I couldn't do it because of my short fingers. That was a transcription of the Queen song "Bohemian Rhapsody" as done by a serious classical guitarist. I'm convinced that he had very long fingers that can reach things that mine can't. But that's *it*. Perhaps as one gets deeply into serious classical guitar, maybe one starts encounting things which need long fingers. But most guitar really doesn't. You might have to work just a little harder at it, but you can do it.

Playing guitar does not have any effect on the shape or size of your fingers. If you play for any length of time though you will begin to develop calluses on the tips of your fingers. This simply means the skin on the ends of your fingers gets tougher although this has practically no effect on the appearance or use of your hands. You may notice grooves on your fingertips immediately after playing though this is normal and they will go away in a few minutes after you stop playing.

Not really; I can imagine having bigger fingers would be a nuisance higher on the fretboard, but it doesn't matter if you overlap onto the fret below as long as you don't muddy the note you're playing. It can be worked around on the fretting hand - and the person with the biggest hands I know plays guitar - and the picking hand shouldn't have a problem if you're using the pick. Small hands is a bigger problem...

Yeah, we have quick (and usually long) fingers. we can control them easily coz were used to it ;)
