Yes, the short scale bass sounds different. It has a light, punchy sound, with less "bottom" than the long scaled one. It's a matter of tone. Play a low E on both Guitars and you will hear the difference instantly. I use a short-scale bass for playing live because it's light, fast, and fun to play. But for recording, you really want the long-scaled bass.
