It depends on the model, I guess. I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo. It's gear box has 5 settings: 2WD, Part-time 4WD, Full Time 4WD, Neutral, and 4WD Low. The forward most setting, the one where the gear handle sits flat, is 2WD. On the small diagram on the console, you will see that only the rear wheels show green if it is in 2WD. Pulling straight up on the lever while the main shift lever is in neutral will put you in part-time 4WD. If you want full-time 4WD, you must push the lever to the right from this point and pull back to find 4 Hi. For 4 low, you pull back again, then to the left, then back again.
The only ways to tow a 2wd is remove the drive shaft or put on a trailer.
No, this is a 4WD all the time vehicle. -- Unless you have the Selec-trac 4wd in it, in which case you select the 2wd option.
Where is the ASD relay located on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 2WD ?
Yes, I own a 1996 2wd Carolina Edition.
This vehicle has full-time 4wd. There is no option to make it rear-wheel drive.
Not sure what a 2x2 Jeep is, but the 2wd and 4wd Cherokees are good vehicles.

You don't! the NP249 in your grand has only 4 high neutral and 4 low. 2wd isn't an option. Correct, but you could remove the front drive shaft from the transfer case.

If it has a 2wd selection on the transfer case shifter, then yes. If it only has 4 hi and 4 lo, then no.
2002 Jeep Liberty 2WD Standard can be towed in neutral. 2002 Jeep Liberty 2WD Automatic cannot be towed. 2002 Jeep Liberty 4WD Standard & Automatic can be towed by placing transfer case in neutral and removing a fuse from the fuse block (ignition fuse). The 2WD Automatic must have the driveshaft disconnected or you must use a tow dolly or car trailer.
If it is full time 4x4 make sure all of your tires are the same size. if it is selectable make sure its in 2wd
2wd = 3-4k pounds safely 4wd = 4-8k pounds safely
