JLS were originally called UFO - Unique Famous Outrageous however when they went on the X factor they had to change their name due to copyright reasons because there was already a famous rock band called UFO.
They changed their name to JLS - Jack the Lad Swing. One of the band members (Marvin Humes) ex-girlfriend came up with the name. This was because the type of music that they sang was called "New Jack Swing", which was a genre of music in the nineties and she thought that the four boys were four Jacks the lads - cheeky young guys. Therefore she amalgamated the two and came up with Jack the Lad Swing.
Hope that helped :)

Marvin`s ex girlfriend came up with the name Jack the Lad Swing.
Oritse Williams (the red one!) wanted to make a boyband because he's alwasy been interested in the music business and so he started looking for members. He already knew Marvin Humes (the green one!) and Marvin had previously been in a band called Vs but they had now split. So then there were two in the band. Marvin had also met Aston Merrygold (the blue one) in a few auditions before so Marvin called Aston whilst Aston was playing football. Aston agreed to being in the band! They still needed one more member, they wanted a guy that is a master at harmonies! So they did their own auditions and found Jonathan Benjamin Gill (the yellow one!).
After a few years they decided to go in for the x factor
