Well, John had a band called The Quarrymen. And at one of his concerts, he met Paul McCartney. In Which, Paul brought George to John and John loved the way George could play guitar, so he joined that band. After Stuart and Pete left The Beatles, Ringo came in and they played at the Cavern and that's where they met Brian, their manager. :)
John Lennon started The Beatles. Before The Beatles, Lennon had made a couple attempts at starting a band, one being with The Quarrymen. Then he met Paul McCartney in 1955, who convinced him to consider including a talented young guitar player by the name of George Harrison. These three, along with drummer Pete Best, were called Johnny and the Moondogs. As they rose to fame in the early 60's, however, recording producers said they would have to get a new drummer and a new name, so Lennon and McCartney convinced Ringo Starr to join their band. The band called The Beatles was now complete and ready to start the journey as one of the most influential artists of all time.
The Beatles were on of the biggest bands. They had a lot to do with music history and Beatlemania was a huge thing in the 1960's. In both America and Britain, the Beatles were huge.
