I assume you mean the radio to which people listen in their homes, cars, and other places. There are also radios that allow communication between pilots, truck drivers police men and many many more.

The radio became an exciting addition to homes. In WW II, many people received news of the war through their radios. The radio served the purpose of providing information to the underground resistance movements in France, Belgium and Denmark. Thus the radio changed the world by providing information at a much more rapid pace.

Prior to the popularity of the radio, most people received news from publications. Thus, current events were at least 1 day old before people were informed. The radio changed the pace at which information was exchanged. The news could be mass delivered almost simultaneously with its occurrence. This increased reaction times for the public.

Universities used radio for educational purposes. Radio shows were also created for entertainment purposes. The world became more homogenous because we were all up to date at about the same time. It did not take a few days for the news to circle the globe and reach far corners of society.

In 1952, one of the mini-transistor radios became available through mass production. By 1954, there were more radio receivers in US than there were daily newspapers published. The race to the immediate dissemination of information through the internet was born.
