Maybe left handed thread
Use a prybar to release the belt tensioner. This will allow you to slip it off. To install, you may need to remove a bolt from the alternator. That is one way to do it but not on my 1992 Cherokee Limited 4.0 HO. The power steering pump was actually the the tensioner pulley. You have to loosen the base then loosen the adjusting bolt under the pump. Prybar and removing bolt from alternator would not work. In a 94 GCL I used a 10mm(?) socket on the tensioner pully and pulled right. Slack was immediate. No need for removing anything except the belt.
depends what year it is. i know that the 94 models you just loosens the bolts in back of the power steering pump and the belts should loosen.
The 1999 Jeep Cherokee employs an interesting idler pulley assembly. What you need to do is:1. Remember the belt routing, it's not printed under the hood.2. Loosen the 15mm hex nut on the idler pulley3. There's a bracket that the idler pulley is connected to and a 15mm tensioning bolt to turn to release the tension off of the belt.Jeep Cherokees seem to like Premium belts best.
sounds like a loose belt, glaze belt
NO - is this a GRAND Cherokee or XJ? What engine does it have? smoth side of belt, to smooth pullies, groved side to groved pullies. Only the right belt will fit. Hope you gave the parts store more info than us or chances are, you have the wrong belt.
Release pressure on automatic belt tensioner
Loosen the tightner pulley then slide it off. Then do the loosen the pulley and put the new one on. Same way to replace all serpitine belts
1999 Chevy cavaler diagram of sepitine belt
Insert a socket or wrench on the spring-loaded serpentine belt tensioner then pull back; the belt will loosen.

A Timing Belt, A Serpitine Belt, A Power Steering Belt, and if you have A/C A Belt for that too...
Loosen bolt in tension pulley, then loosen tension bolt. Replace belt. Tighten tension bolt. Last, tighten bolt through pulley.
If you looking behind or on the side of the power steering pump, you'll see a bolt. When you loosen the bolt, the pump will slide down and loosen the belt.
You pry it over enough to remove the belt. You loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and thread the adjuster bolt backwards on a 4.0L.
try to push the belt tensioner in then the belt should come loose
it is adjusted throught the power steering pump loosen the adjuster bolts remove belt and reverse
I'm going to go with the alternator here.
