Usually on a double neck guitar one is a 6 string and one is a 12 string. All a 12 string is is a 6 string guitar, but for every string there's an octave higher string right next to it, and when you play you hold both those strings down at the same time, giving you a little fuller and different sound than a 6 string. So I guess the player just switches when he wants to between the two. However, some double-necks vary in number of strings. If you really want to play, go and buy a basic do-it-yourself double-neck guitar teaching book...like i did....
One neck is a regular six string, the other is twelve strings.
depends on brands, I saw one on craigslist today for 500 dollars canadian, an epiphone one about 1000$ new i've seen locally in a real guitar store. Ask yourself this though do you like/need a 12 string neck for the second neck or play in more than one tuning and need to have more than one guitar with you on stage at the same time.
Steel guitars, typically. However, this technique can be used on a normal guitar.
Yes. Gibson makes a double neck 12 string guitar. Jimmy Page from Led Zepplin is probably best known for playing this guitar, as a well known Rock musician. Awesome footage live of him can be seen in a variety of places including you tube. Id recommend renting the song remains the same video. He plays the double neck in a few different tunes in that movie.

If your fingers can bridge the neck of the guitar, you can learn to play it on your own. You can buy a beginner's book, or you can Google "free guitar lessons" and learn some chords from there.

A guitar.
If you mean the Guitar Hero III guitar then there are two switches on the back. The one just below the neck of the guitar (It looks like a quarter of a circle.) detaches the neck so you can store the guitar AND the neck in a smaller space, and the switch towards the side of the guitar detaches the faceplate so you can put a different faceplate on, or play without a faceplate.
Brandon Jacobs is known for his amazing guitar feats and his viruoso solos on an acoustic guitar and also on his electric double neck guitar while playing with steel finger picks.
