Jazz is a huge influence on todays music, like many styles of music it originated from the beats of the African drum which later on evolved and joined with other instruments to create a new form of music. There is now big band jazz, solo jazz, instrumentation jazz, acid jazz, modern jazz, classical jazz, funk (style of jazz). The basic role of the members of a jazz band is, for the front liners/ singers, to play the melody and take improvised solos based around the harmonic progression (chords). The Guitars sound out harmonic changes using syncopated rhythms behind the front line and also take improvised solos. The bass or double bass player sounds out the harmonic changes of the song, they create the pulse.....
Not that simple a question. To briefly answer just one aspect, many jazz performers also were trained in Classical Music, so the idea of having structure in music (from the classical genre) mixed with the idea of independence and solo performances (from jazz and blues). That mixture was one factor in creating the musical form heard on many pieces in the 1930s and 1940s, where songs consisted of strictly arranged stanzas punctuated by improvised solos. To name a few performers, Fats Waller studied Bach's music and released a number of performances of his organ works. In addition to being the King of Swing, Benny Goodman was one of the foremost interpreters of Mozart's clarinet pieces during the 1930s and 1940s. Duke Ellington used classical forms in many of his longer pieces. Woody Herman and Igor Stravinsky collaborated on experimental jazz-classical fusion pieces, and at the time of his death, Glenn Miller was studying classical arranging and conducting in England.
As with all music, it depends on the person you are talking about. Strictly speaking, classical music can encompasses the Classical Period, the Baroque Period, and/or the Romantic Period. The Baroque Period was around the time of Bach and others. The music is much more rigid than modern music. Because of that, it can feel old fashioned. However, to the trained ear it can provide many emotions, but in controlled, structured amounts. The Classical Period came after with Mozart, just to name one. The music became less rigid (slightly) so the emotions people feel are generally more exaggerated. The Romantic Period was all about emotion. Beethoven and others pushed the boundaries of the rules. This music can make people feel many emotions to a large extent. Essentially, it all depends on the person.
By "Classical" i will assume you mean most music written before 1910.
Look at the basic harmonies used in say a Mozart/Bach sonata. Then look at the colour that was added by composers such as Liszt, Debussy and Chopin.
Those harmonies form the bases of the majority of modern music from film to popular and the freedom expressed by the later composers pushed us towards a more experimental look at music.
Just a couple of thoughts - that is an ENORMOUS question!
I studied with Grover Sales at San Francisco State University from 1980 to 1984. Taking several of his Jazz appreciation classes. He did not coin the phrase "America's Classical Music", but instead indicated that Ahmad Jamal (a great pianist) was the first he heard use the phrase. He merely borrowed the phrase. But nevertheless, Mr. Sales (may he rest in peace) did use the phrase constantly. He wanted young folks to hold this music called Jazz in higher regard than it was being held. He wanted Americans to respect the music in the same way that Europeans respect it. And the same way we respect European "classical" music.
Harmonically, "classical" music and "popular" music share many of the same ideas. To site a broad example, cadential ideas that have been used in classical music still appear in today's popular music. A cadential passage consists of the a chord or set of chords and/or melody that signifies the end of a passage, phrase, or the work as a whole. This practice was mostly stylized and standardized during the baroque period, specifically by J.S. Bach.
