Their is no way to really get an accurate count, but their are thousands of people who play. They may not be in a band but their are many players.
Many guitarists move their mouths along with the notes they play when soloing. However this is up to the individual guitarist, and not all do.
Four. Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted and their current one, Robert Trujillo. Ron quit the band because Dave was dumb. Cliff died. Jason also quit.
My band has 2 guitarists one bass and one lead, a drummer, electric and electric acoustic guitars, A mandoline, a violen, and a singer and back up singers.
The bass has a low sound and is used in bands to help keep the rythym, working very closely with the drummer. Whilst the guitarists go showing off the bass is responsible for keeping the beat and the key in tact and ties it all together. The bass has a beuatiful tone and although it is used for solos it isn;t really a "show off" instrument, but an essential and tbh brillinat one.
An Electric Bass is an amplified four-stringed instrument which produces low sounds. A lot of the time, the instrument will be a back-up to a more 'major' instrument in the song such as the Electric Guitar.

The primary instruments are basically a 3-piece band set - Acoustic guitar, Bass (standup or even washboard for the adventurous), and drums. Some groups use no percussion at all, using only a Bass to maintain the beat. And going further, some don't even use a Bass - in the early days of Folk Music, Bass lines were actually played by one of the Guitarists.
