Queen had four members, Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. The band decided to split after the death of Mercury in 1991.
In 2004 May and Taylor decided to reform Queen with Paul Rodgers as lead vocalist, Deacon decided not to join them.
Brian May (lead guitarist) and John Deacon (Bass guitarist) were the two Guitarists in Queen, however all four of them could play acoustic. Freddie Mercury played acoustic in the song crazy little thing called love. Now of course its just Brian that plays in everything!
The band I am in has two guitarists, one lead and one rhythm. A keyboard player and a drummer. (The guitarists also sing vocals) It depends on what type of music you are playing. A full rock band usually includes a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, a vocalist, a bassist, a synth player, and a drummer.
I original guitarists were James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch. But Brian has left the band and Wesley Geer fills in on tours.
It is possible for a band to have two rhythm guitarists and one lead guitarist just because of the fact that no one can stop them if this is what they want to do. However, it is not common for a band to do that.

for the same reason any band has 2 guitarists. They can harmonize off each other and play different parts. In a live perfformance setting, during the guitar solo, having a second guitarist playing the rhythm section 'fills' the sound...otherwise it would sound empty. Also, the guitarists are usually the songwriters and they sometimes form partnerships with other like minded guitarists
