You can't really answer the question with a specific number because it depends on what kind of band. Full jazz bands usually have 4 or 5, small ensembles have 2 or 3, rock bands usually have 1 or 2, but in general, you can have as many as you want, or as may as it takes to cover all the Trumpet parts.

Who was the most important person in the dixieland jazz band?

In a Dixieland jazz band, the most important person is often considered to be the cornet or trumpet player, typically leading the ensemble and setting the musical direction. How do you get signed by playing the trumpet?

If you mean getting signed as a professional player, it's difficult. There are thousands and thousands of aspiring trumpet players out there, and most of them aren't as good as they think they are. For symphony orchestras, you almost always have to audition, and many symphonies don't have regular audtions. For instance, the trumpet section in the symphony in my city has been the same for 5 or 6 years, and the principal trumpet player has been the same player for 20 years.
