Just circumstantial. Father was a Dr. and established his own hospital. Eric had lmany full concerts and a couple of top-of-the charts tunes in the 90's. Has always published materials as a "Guitarists' guitarist." Doesn't come off as being extravagant. Has always sold off amps and other equipment that he doesn't need. Apparently doesn't do drugs/ alcohol. Apparently has a nice house in Austin, but nothing overly extravagant (except from the studio, but since he's usually his own technician, very likely that he did a lot of the work himself). Never seems to worry about getting more done faster to make a buck. This summer (2011), for example has him doing maybe 4 shows and taking a decent vacation in the middle.
Living the artists life...Hey, Why not? He put in the work on the guitar, for sure. Time to relax and live the good life.

In my opinion, there's no contest, Eric is an unbelievable technical guitarist and has a lot more range than Slash. That's what you have to listen for, most people judge on speed not technique and that gets boring very quickly.
