Franz Hell was born in 1896 in Norway and learned violin making in Germany. He imigrated to the US in 1921 and worked both in Chicago and Norway. His earliest instruments were made probably no earlier than 1920.. contrary to some of his labels that indicate earlier. Some of his violin label dates indicate the instrument was made prior to his birth.

How old can a violin get?

As old as any object can get! Violins first appeared in the early 1500's, and the earliest surviving examples date from the Elizabethan period. But as to how old they can BECOME, this entirely depends upon how well they are looked after and preserved. There is no reason why the earliest surviving ones should not continue in existence for many centuries more if looked after properly- and that applies to all violins made since then!

Do budget violins play?

Can you rephrase the question please? Do you mean: Do cheap violins sound good? If that is what you mean, I can answer that. I have just passed my grade 4 with merit, so I know quite a bit about violins. It really depends on the player, you see. But the older the violin is the better it sounds. I am just about to by a good, old one. the price range for older ones, are probably minimum of £650-£700, minimum. The older it is, the better the wood is. The most bottom range that you can get of violins is an Antoni. Starter violins. I recommend you start on an Antoni, as they are very cheap, so if you decide that you don't want to play anymore, then you havn't lost lots of money. If you definitely are going to play, then try a Stentor violin. That is better, and it costs about £80-£150. I hope you found this helpful.
