Christine was seduced by the phantom, and loved what he represented... danger, passion, music, and a lost connection to her father. But as the play continues, Raoul enters and offers a secure relationship, one that is safer and more familiar, and the phantom's darkness and passion become increasingly dangerous and no longer appealing to her. At the masquerade, he pulls her engagement ring from her neck, in jealousy, and says "these chains are mine, you belong to me". As she is set up as bait in the trap to capture the phantom, she confesses to Raoul that she is scared, and if the phantom finds her she will be his forever. In the end, when the phantom drives her to make an extreme decision, marry him or he will kill Raoul, she sees the phantom's dark and dangerous side for what it is. She pities him, and hates him. She puts on the ring and kisses him once in an attempt to save Raoul; but then is suprised by the passion that she feels, and kisses him again. This is when the phantom finally sees himself for what he is, and loving Christine, he no longer wants her to stay with him. In their final encounter, she returns the ring that he has stolen from her neck to him, showing that she and is still bound to him, and watches the phantom as Raoul takes her away. Yes, she loved the phantom. Some of these answers are found in an interview with phantom producer, Austin Shaw: http://www.reallyuseful.com/rug/shows/phantom/newsDetail.htm?id=207

There are many similarities between Kristina Nilsson and Christine Daae in Gaston Leroux 's works Phantom of the Opera . It is said that Leroux-based nature of the Opera singer, but there is no evidence.

"Some experts agree that the character of Christine Daae in the novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux was based upon the real-life Swedish-born opera star, Christine Nilsson - also known as Kristina Nilsson.

Christina (Christine) Nilsson (1843-1921) became one of the most

famous sopranos of her time. She was born at the Snugge farm not far

from Växjö in the Småland province in south Sweden. Nilsson began to

sing and play the violin in public already as a child, gave her first

concerts in 1859 and was further educated in Stockholm and Paris. In

Paris, she made her sensational debut in 1864 at Théâtre Lyrique as

Violetta in La Traviata. In the following years, she had great success

in the French and Italian repertoire in Paris and London and other

European cities. Her Ophélie in Thomas' Hamlet, which role she created

at the Paris Opera in 1868, was especially famous. She made four

extensive tours in North America and sang Marguerite in Faust at the

opening performance of the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1883. Her

last public appearance was in London in 1891.

According to the Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, Christine Daaé was born just outside the Swedish town of Uppsala. Her mother died when Christine was a baby, and she was brought up by her father, traveling to fairs where he played the violin and she sang. They were discovered there by Professor Valérius, who took them to Gothenburg and then to Paris, providing for Christine's education.

Christine was extremely close to her father, who told her Scandinavian fairy-tales; a tale of the "Angel of Music" was her favorite. Christine's father died, and left her disconsolate, despite the loving care of her "adopted" mother, the bedridden wife of the late Professor Valérius, Madame Valérius. Christine enters the Paris Conservatory and trains for four years to become a professional singer to please her father and Mamma Valérius, but has lost all passion for singing.

There is only one that was filmed at the Opera Garnier. It is called The Phantom of the Opera :), and stars Charles Dance as Erik, and Teri Polo as Christine. I would highly recommend watching it; it is a lovely film, and an interesting take on the Phantom's story.

Why does Christine remove the phantoms mask for the second time?

The real reason by Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, Christine removes the Phantom's Mask the second time, is show his real face that he is hiding behind and to scare the audiences. She loves him for who he is and not the mask he wears. That's totally up to the person watching the show... Some say it was the only way to get the Phantom's attention to the guys with the guns so he wouldn't get shot, others say it was because it was the only way for Christine to not get carried away by the passion and go with the Phantom, and others say that she was letting the police know it was him so they could shoot him. The reason is up to you. It depends on how you think of Christine and the relationship between her and the Phantom. It can be whatever you think.
