Highland Guitars are made in China. I'm told and I also believe them as well, that they come from the same factory that other "brand names" have their china offerings made. Case in point is the Epiphone ES-335. I can buy it at the Steve's Music blowout price of $499 CDN or buy the Highland HEG-500. There is not a spick of difference in construction, sound, fit/finish (Highland comes with a classy wood pickguard), which tells me that they probably did come from the same factory. I can get the Highland for $449. BTW the Highland case for $89 is better looking and has a hygrometer built-in. I've had mine about a year now and am looking for the HEJ-640 Titan.

The biggest problem with using a semi-hollow is that high volume or distortion, both likely to be required for a rock sound, will cause it to feed back more easily than a solidbody. This can be an advantage- Ted Nugent has used this as part of "his" sound since the 60s to get endless sustain, and it can be great if you want to create "soundscapes" rather than play hard-rockin' riffs, but it requires good left- and right-hand muting to keep the guitar from getting out of control. Some people fill the hollow cavities with newspaper or put tape over the soundholes to try to reduce feedback, but plenty of players get by fine without all that. A yes or no answer? Yes. Practice your muting (and then stop doing it during the crazy parts!), and don't expect to sound like Metallica, but yes.

And many woods used in acoustic-guitar manufacturing -- rosewood, mahogany, maple -- are also used to make electric guitars. That said, it's true that many hollow-bodied guitars were not intended to make a loud acoustic sound. Some of them are "thinlines" -- with small, shallow bodies that add to playing comfort, but take away from acoustic projection. Some, such as the ES-335, aren't completely hollow, but are "semi-hollow" guitars with a solid wood center block, which also takes away from acoustic projection. However, many hollowbody electric guitars, such as the Gretsch 6120 and the Gibson Super 400, are large and hollow enough that they have quite good acoustic projection. Stringing them with thicker strings would also improve the acoustic tone. The Taylor T5 is a good example of a hybrid guitar that can be played both acoustically and electrically.

Only Gretsch can build a Gretsch guitar. You might want to build a copy of a Gretsch guitar. There are quite a few different models, most of which are acoustic or semi-hollow bodied. To make a hollow-body guitar requires a lot of craftmanship. You might want to start out building a solid body guitar, which is much easier, but you will get familiar with some of the woodworking techniques used in more advance guitar making. If you start with a solid body guitar, you are pretty sure to finish up with a good playable guitar, which will help motivate you to continue improving.

What guitars are good for punk?
Any solid body guitar really. I wouldn't recommend any hollow body guitar or a model that feeds back as I imagine you'd want the gain high if you're playing punk. Anything with humbuckers will suit you fine, however a hollow body ca work in some cases (blink-182). Avoid big name metal brands such as B.C. Rich, Dean, and Jackson, as their guitars are build for heavier sounds then you want for punk
