Well it was written by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen 35 years ago and has since been recorded by over 200 artists. In the 2001 Shrek film, it is sung by John Cale in a great version.

Other famous renditions are by Jeff Buckley and KD Laing, though Cohen's own version has grown massively in popularity.

You could say it is a gospel song because it expresses a spiritual belief with powerful vocals, good rhythm, a strong chorus and has been sung a zillion times in churches - all pointers used to define a gospel song.

There is such a loose definition of Gospel Music that just about anything could be included, so yes, it could be regarded as a gospel song.

But more than that, it is just a great song. It has been called the greatest song ever.
