A few singers who perform music that is in the funk genre are James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Rick James. Funk was very popular through the 80s and 90s.
Like most things, funk music was male-dominated at its start. Disco, however, was a reaction to the exclusionary nature of funk as an art, as well as to the exclusionary nature of other types of music prevalent at the time. As such, it was created by those marginalized groups: LGBT individuals, African-Americans, Latinos, and women. Disco, then, was more female-dominated than funk, and funk remained dominated by the mainstream group: white heterosexual men.
There have been several music artists who have performed the song 'We Want The Funk', such as Snoop Dog. The P-Funk Allstars first performed the song, as did George Clinton.
Funk music is music that gets the audience on their feet and start dancing! It's usually in the form of "New Orleans Street Beat", "Swing", Dixie, and ballad forms. It consists of usually a horn section, rythem section and a choral section. James Brown was the founding father of the genre "funk", it all started because of racism against African Americans, James fought racism with the power of music. Personally some of my favorite funk bands are "Tower of Power"," Earth wind & Fire", James Brown, Galactic, The Funk Brothers ( Motown), Larry Grahm, Weather Report, etc.
Jazz-funk is a sub-genre of jazz music characterized by a strong back beat (groove) electrified sounds, and often, the presence of the first electronic analog synthesizers.

The role of music is to express the feeling of the person who wrote it. And in other countries the role of music can mean other things. In some countries music can hold the history from that certain country.

Punk is a subclutre, that has her own fashion, ideology and music style, that called punk rock. Funk is a music style that has no connection to punk, it's actually a black music genere that developed from rhytm & blues i think.
