And, as jazz musicians were employed as entertainers on the river boats that plied the Mississippi, this helped to spread knowledge of the music as far North as St.Louis and towns in between. When, the red light area of New Orleans was forcibly closed down on moral grounds, much of the work for jazz musicians in the city's clubs and brothels dried up. A forced migration of musicians to all over the US then began as an economic necessity.
