A parasitic insect came from Mexico the South of the U.S. in 1915 and destroyed most of the cotton. African-Americans lost their jobs and faced greater segregation from the 'new' 2nd KKK group. These were the reasons why they wanted to leave the South. An opportunity came during World War I. The North was in need of more jobs to satisfy the war cause. In that short span of years, hundreds of thousands of African Americans migrated to the North. This went on for years and years. It was the Great Migration. As they spread, so did their music. Companies started to promote this type of music and records were sold. In the 1930s, were some of the most famous and influential blues artists of all time. This form of music became popular in the North and the West (because some African-Americans migrated there, too) after its long semi-isolation in the South. The spread of the blues was aided by many factors that worked in combination: the parasite, increased segregation, World War I, and the Great Migration.
