Means you shouldn't be too smart at an early age. Adults hate people age 16-21 who can outperform them in every way, including intellectually.

In those days, if you were extremely smart and young, you could gather a very vast base for rebellions against landlords or local dukes/kings. If you knew how to read, what the people want, etc.. People could've supported the young man instead of the king.

Just look at Joan of Arc, ok she was female but the point stands, her success didn't only come from religious piousness. She was incredibly intelligent and had grasps of combat tactics, strategy and politics while being half the age of the local french rulers.

In other words, idiocy is a survival trait. The dumber you are for longer, the more likely you'll survive.

Be too smart at an early age and you will face a violent death from older less intelligent opposers.

In which of Shakespeare's plays would you find the quote So wise so young they say never live long?

In Act 3 Scene 1 of Richard III, Richard says " So wise so young, they say, do never live long." as an aside after a remark by his nephew Prince Edward. His meaning is that when people that young are that clever, they can expect to die soon. Although Edward's death did not in the least depend on his cleverness.
