I wouldn't go any lower then 9s or it feels loose and sloppy to me. I have a friend that swears by 11s to get the low bass for Country Music, but then again I heard Waylon Jennings used 7s. The thicker you go the harder it is to bend. If you are looking for the country twang sound you can get it with any of the string sizes it just depends on how you set up your pickups and amp. Just remember to snap those strings.
