A very brief summary of Nick Joaquin's "The Legend of the Virgin's Jewel" is that a monk wishes to adorn a statue of the Virgin Mary to please his own idea of how she should be venerated. To do so, he vows to remove the jewel of a local snake god and give it to the statue of the Virgin. In a vision he does so. Killing the snake deity is a symbol of conquering "heathen" religions and giving the jewel to the Virgin symbolizes Christianity coming to dominate other religions.
