When Goodman's father took him and two of his brothers (Harry and Freddy) to the Kehelah Jacob Synagogue, Benny was given the Clarinet because he was the smallest. He really didn't have a choice in the matter, but he seemed very good at it. Because of his ability to think in cascades of notes, his style fit perfectly with the instrument he was given.

I do not know about Lester Young. However I saw "Benny Goodman's b-flat clarinet" in the music instrument hall of the Metropolitan museum in NY City about 10 years ago. One would imagine it's still there in its glass case, looking really superb just like its owner used to play.
