When Goodman's father took him and two of his brothers (Harry and Freddy) to the Kehelah Jacob Synagogue, Benny was given the Clarinet because he was the smallest. He really didn't have a choice in the matter, but he seemed very good at it. Because of his ability to think in cascades of notes, his style fit perfectly with the instrument he was given.
