The ancient Romans had blown instruments, plucked stringed instruments, drums, rattles, gonglike metal pans, and organs. Their blown instruments included horns called cornu, trumpets called tubae, oboes, flutes, panpipes, and possibly bagpipes (evidence for bagpipes is inconclusive). They seem not to have had single reed instruments such as clarinets. They had lyres, including expensive lyres called kythera, and a lute, seen in art work as having three strings, though the lute seems not to have been very popular. Bowed instruments had not yet been invented, and though there were harps, especially from Egypt, they were not used much in ancient Rome. The organ of ancient Rome was a pipe organ usually with pressure regulated by a wind chest that was kept under water pressure, though some other wind chest or bag seems also to have been used. Pictures are not very clear and there are only fragmentary remains.

Instruments of the trumpet family, which includes trombones, were known in very ancient history, in places like Mesopotamia. The word "sackbutt," an English word for the trombone, is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. See the Related Link for more information.

You may be thinking of the term 'a cappella'. It refers to music that is sung by voices without accompaniment on instruments of any kind. It comes from Cappella Sistina, the pope's chapel in Rome, where this was the only way liturgical music was performed.
