Electric guitars are an essential element of Rock, Metal, Pop, Country, and Blues, and have prominent roles in many other styles from Jazz to Hip-Hop. Classical Music is perhaps one of the only styles of mainstream western music that doesn't regularly feature the Electric Guitar.
It has been used in most styles of music, but is near-ubiquitous in rock and metal.

You can essentially play any style you want. Taking into account fretboard style, pickups and amp/pedal configuration you can play anything.

Fretboard style effects ease of playing style for example: a guitar with a small neck radius (fret boart is more curved) it is harder to play slide guitar, with a scalloped neck (when the wood between each fret dips, ie Yngwie Malmsteen) it is more difficult for chords to sound in perfect pitch. However, a flat nect is good for slide and classical/spanish guitar and a scalloped neck is great for sweep picking and arppegios.

Depending on your amp and the pedals you have you can imitate a clean classical sound or even with a solid body electric you can imitate a good hollowbody blues or rockabilly sound. When it comes to amps and pedals however, the key word is "imitate." You can get a near perfect classical tone on an electric but it will never be as nice as a good classical guitar.

depends on what style you play , if you play something like a spanish guitar scale with no distortion you'll get one sound but say a Phrigian scale which is totally different with a lot of reverb and distortion you'll get this sound.

Rock, blues, grunge, metal, pop, alternative, jazz....and subgenres of these. Every once in a while its used in hip hop but that is rare.
