There are mixed reviews on the EMG 81. People are confused because there is not much said about how it works or if it's just any better than the standard pick up. The EMG 81 is "suppose" to increase separation between the overtones, offer a greater volume limit, and a quicker response time when keys are played. The info given out to customers does not give them enough to go on to go and purchase one.
An EMG 81-60 setup is great for a rhythm guitarist
Most metal musicians like, say Metallica use an active pickup. eg.( the EMG 81/85 )
Traditionally the EMG 81 is used in the bridge position and the 85 is used in the neck position.
I've heard people switch them to that , but good thing about EMG pickups just like any other active pickups on the market you can swap them very easily without brining them to a guitar shop. you just take out the cable from the pickup and just replace it with say the 81, nothing fancy required... so go for it, some honestly like it more. Its all what you want to do really.
The EMG 81/85 set can be purchased through most music stores that deal in instruments and musical equipment. Guitar Center is also a great place to pick stuff like this up if you happen to have one of those available. If neither of these are an option, they are available online at places like Musician's Friend, Guitar Center's website, and eBay.

EMG 81/85 Active Humbuckers
zakk wylde uses 81/85 emg pick-ups and they are really good for metal, and hard rock not good for alot more than that

Yes, but you have to find a cavity for this battery. A good place is under the guard where the electronics are stored. This is where I keep the battery in my RG120 after I replaced the stock INF4 with an EMG 81. I also did the 18v mod to make the pickup a little hotter. Do a search for EMG 81 18v mod for details. It's quite simple to do and will make your RG120 scream.
its all a matter of taste these are some of the best to me and what I'd play Seymour Duncan Invaders (really high output for metal) Seymour Duncan Blackouts EMG 81 (best EMG bridge pickup) EMG 89 (its like 2 pickups instead of one) Dimarzio X2N (amazing for metal) Dimarzio D-Activator (great neck pickup) or go with what your guitar gods use Steve Vai has Breed and Evolution pickups Kerry King, Zakk Wylde and so on have signature EMG's best thing to do other than trying them is to youtube them
Well EMG is probably your best bet. You pickup depends on the type of music you play. EMG 81(lead) and 85(rhythm) are for most types of rock. Higher output pickups are crunchier and for harder rock. Go to http://dimarzio.com/site/#/pickuppicker/ to help decide for dimarzio brand pickups. If you need more help, post a comment on my user.
